Who would you call to clean your carpets?
1. Special: Entire house, no limit, 39.99. or
2. Bob's Steam Service: Special: 24.50 per room, minimum 3 rooms.
Who would you think is a better caterer?
1. Ace In The Hole Catering: We'll serve chicken skewers, rice, beans and tortillas for 100 people for 2.99 each.
2. Bob's Catering: Mexican style dinner, 4 course meal for 100 people minimum: 7.99 per plate.
Who would you call to play trumpet in your band?
1. Jimmy, the guy who emails you once a week and says he'll play any gig for 20.00.
2. Bob Bitchin, a guy who tells you he'd like to help you out but needs to get at least 100.00 for a 2 hour gig.
In all of these examples, you should be skeptical of #1 and use #2, Bob. Sometimes charging more, or even charging, adds value to an item. The Hot Dog guy gives away the condos because he's already making a 4000% profit on his 1.50 "food like product".
There is an upscale restaurant in one of the 5-star hotels in Chicago. The GM gave a lecture at Purdue (the place where IU grads apply after their graduation) on pricing. His finest restaurant had meals STARTING at 54.00, and that was just the entree. Vegies were 15.00 or more and a twice backed potato was 22.00. Salads were in the range of 29.00 to 58.00 each. So, the clients are getting a typical meal for around 140.00 each. He had an after dinner drink that had been priced at 26.00 a shot. When he took over the place, he raised the price of a shot to 79.00 and couldn't keep the stuff in stock. Why get a shot of a lousy 26.00 drink when you just spent over 140.00 on your meal. The 79.00 drink MUST be better right????? Cool.
Does this apply to musicians? Sure does. Keep working for 50.00 a gig and pretty soon that's all you'll get except for the occasional respectable salary. I know we've all done them or even free gigs, but if you price yourself in the 'salsa' range (no offense but most salsa bands make parking money), you'll get that or less all the time. If you quote yourself and your bands at a higher rate, you'll get fewer gigs, yes, but in the long run you'll make more money AND work for people who will respect you AND refer you out for even MORE higher paying gigs. It's a tough balancing act to say the least. I swear, I must hear "We can't pay much but you'll get lots of exposure" at least 3 times a month. I thank them for calling me and wish them luck finding the right fit.
