I'm originally a trumpet player, but do most of my gigging now on bone. I started playing it in high school and don't think it really 'helps' range but doesn't hurt it either. I prefer to go back and forth as it helps relax the chops. I use a standard bone mouthpiece, a Jet-tone Urbie Green model. Some guys recommend using a very small mouthpiece to make it closer to a trumpet one but that seems silly to me. Whatever works best is all that matters. If you're a 'chop' guy, you may freak out at first and not like it at all. If you're a breath guy you should adapt quickly.
