Thanks, shooby. Maynard's superb valve trombone work is much in evidence on the Roulette collection. If memory serves, he usually played French horn, mellophone, euphonium, and baritone horn in ensemble sections of arrangements or on written solo lines. One notable exception is "Jazzberries," MF's baritone horn duel with baritone saxophonist Frank Hittner on
Newport Suite
. Some of the charts on
Maynard '61
, most notably "Goodbye," and on
Maynard '63
and
Message from Maynard
as well make good use of Maynard's haunting French horn sound.
Oh, and as far as looking cool: How about a bass trumpet with a bell angled 45 degrees like Dizzy's?
