When playing latin music of nearly any style, obviously try to feel the clave, but don't forget, you have the parts in front of you and if you listen to the bass and the congas, you shouldn't ever lose where 1 is. In most salsa tunes the conga player almost always plays 2 quavers on beat 4 of each bar and if you hear the bongo player when he changes to cowbell (you should do, no matter what!) he/she is always playing (irrespective of patterns and extras) on 1 and 3 of every bar, It's not really that hard. Cumbia and merengue are much easier. If you get into some cuban rumba, that's another story. Could be a little tricky, but not really.
