Ah yes. Great moment from a great night of music making in Porterville. I think the fact that Maynard biffed the first double C, then went for it again with more confidence than a horny bull really put the icing on the cake that night. One thing I keep going back to that night is how MF took the bridge of Girl from Ipanema down an octave on flugel horn rather than playing it high on the trumpet. Really tastefully done if I do say so myself.
Yea ... Porterville was a great gig! The school staff, the teachers, family that drove us from the hotel to the venue, THE FOOD!!!! I also made a few new friends there. (monetteB4L - drop me a PM)

Another treasured moment ... although not on the stage. Any one who knows me knows I 'LOVE' to cook. As a matter of fact Lin Biviano and I were sharing some Italian cooking hints back and forth this afternoon. Anyway, as we were checking into the hotel in D.C. (playing at Blues Alley) I noticed that we had kitchenette's in our hotel rooms. It was Maynard, Ed, Mike Freeland and me at the desk. I'd seen a grocery store not but a mile from the hotel. It was the first time any of us had really talked about this, but I'd mentioned I was going to go to the store to get some food so I could cook breakfest and lunch for Maynard. Mike asked, "so you like to cook?" "Oh yea, mostly Italian food, but yea." Mike say's with a smile, "we're all going to get along just fine." Then Maynard perked up and blurted out, "Ah ... ED ... I'll tell you what. Fire the new trumpet player, and ah ... hire him back as privite chef 'double salary'."
