I think you made a valid point and had some specific examples to back it up. However, I think that Gordon is not alone in having recognizable "patterns" in his writing. You mentioned Tom Kubis. If you listen to "O Holy Night," you'll hear a pattern that he uses all the time. It starts out with flugel and soprano sax in a real relaxed statement of the theme then it builds to where a tpt plays the theme an octave up, then the tune ends with a huge chord. I asked him about that once but it was some years ago. Wish I could remember his response but I'm suffering from the memory of a 51 y/o. I know he didn't deny that there were recognizable patterns that he used. Isn't this somewhat similar to when you hear certain people improvise? Part of what makes them recognizable is their sound and part of what makes them recognizable it is the lines they play. Whether you're improvising (i.e. composing on the spot) or arranging, wouldn't it make sense that you would have a finite number of ideas or resources from which to choose? They would be working from their improvising vocabulary and/or from their arranging vocabulary and that vocabulary would be recognizable to a seasoned listener such as yourself.
