I guess the confusion about the "last Lead player" is that I was on the band when Woody was still alive but not on the tour.
Woody was getting better, and few times wanted, and was going to get back on the tour, but he lost the battle.
So technically I may have been the "last", but Roger is really the last lead player to play for Woody.
sidebar.
I was on Buddy's band for 2 1/2 years.......he passed,
I got on Woody's band........................................he passed
I did a short tour with Mel Lewis....................he passed
Someone mentioned this to Maynard, and when I saw him in 1992, he said, "Stay away from me Eric!!"
Woody passed few month after I joined, Greg Gisbert got me on the band after Billy left. Billy was on the band for just a short time, so I was kind of taking over Roger's chair.
That was such a big pleasure (Pressure!!) to play after Roger. Shew was the first one to hip me to Roger' playing. Gave me Woody's 50th Anniversary Tour CD, and told me to check him out good. I was on Buddy's band then, and I got caught by Buddy listening to that CD almost everyday. He got pissed thinking that I wanted to leave the band to join Woody, so he gave me a raise!! (thanks Roger!)
Woody's book was fun book to play, the band played for the most time acoustically, just 2 solo mics front of the band, as opposed to Buddy's band where we all had microphones.
There were so many great charts in the book, in variety of styles, and we did quite a few dances, and the dance book had all of these great classic charts by Chase, Shorty, Natt, Dusko.......wow!!!!
But it was tough trying to come in to the book where Roger had left all of them dubbas!!!!
Roger is without a doubt one of my all time trumpet heroes, his time feel, tone, and fire in his interpretation of that book is just fantastic!
I am honored to have played that book.
Eric
