I know this is probably not on topic for this thread, but of the two cuts that were released on that famous Capitol Records picture sleeve single, Hot Canary was the least impressive to me. Of course, Maynard does things with that song that no one else would even attempt, but that recording has always represented, at least for me, everything that MF was criticized for over the years. It is all gimmick and high notes and in my opinion fails to display Maynard's true musical gifts. Now, the flip side, What's New, is an entirely different story with its beautiful upper and lower register playing and the beautiful musicality that always characterized Maynard's best moments. And, that admittedly gimmicky false ending bit at the close just seems to add to the dramatic aura of MF in ways that canary never approaches. Yes, the physical aspects of Maynard's playing on the bird song are impressive, but the flip side is where the real musical moments are nesting.
