While on the road with Woody in the summer of 1986, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, and Nancy Wilson came out and joined the Woody Herman Orchestra for a one week string of dates on the east coast billed as the "Jazz Explosion" tour. Maynard left his band (including Wayne) at home. A few of the charts Maynard was doing with his band at the time were re-orchestrated for the instrumentation of Woody's band. One of the tunes we did was "Body and Soul" featuring Maynard. The trumpet section was myself, Larry Gillespie, Marc Lewis, Ron Stout and Bill Byrne.
As this was the only time Maynard ever toured with Woody (that I know of), the concert you're referring to most likely occurred during this time.
