I still submit that no one had a more glorious, pure, big, cutting butter with a hot knife sound in a concert hall than Doc.
Doc's sound was amazing, possibly only a handful in history with a sound even close. That being said, Doc stood side-by-side with Anthony Plog at a trumpet thing in the early 90's, and while I like Doc's sound better, Plog had more "oomph" while still sounding orchestral. Doc did comment when talking about breath control that his own sound gets a bit too "dance band sounding" when he pushes the dynamics...then commented in true Doc style... "It's a good thing I like doing dance band stuff."
Doctorbear: The two times I saw Doc giving a clinic he was using a 5B and 6C, and commented both times that pieces "in the middle of the Bach selection" seem to work best, then citing 3C to 7C or thereabouts.
