Bulowl, we all have our favorites and I admit that Doc's is my favorite sound. I do understand, though, that not even Doc had a perfect sound. No one ever has. I've heard Doc in the low range introduce what I think were some unwanted artifacts into his tone, and with that pronounced upward tilt as he descended, he could be less than perfect with his tonguing and focus below low C. Certainly not the kind of sound that would disarm us like the rest of his range does. What I like most about Doc's sound, and what IMHO he does better than anybody ever, is the range from second space G to G on the staff. There was an intensity there like a flame thrower. I remember once in the mid seventies at Magic Mountain in California listening to him from about the fifth row as he aimed his horn straight at my face (I could see the breath condensing inside his bell every time he blew a note). He played a simple melody in his money range and I have to say that almost thirty years of playing and listening all over America, I've never heard anything equal to that sound. He left me limp without ever leaving the staff.
