Jim in Cincy, you've made an important decision which will affect your health for the rest of your hopefully long life. Good for you!!
Contrary to the naysayers, it
will
be easy, but it will take a bit of work. It's all about bringing your calorie intake and your calorie usage into balance. In a nutshell, if you put it in, you gotta burn it off. Any excess calories turn into fat.
First, you have to address the reason why you're eating too much. There's a reason. Analyze that, and fix it.
Second, come up with an alternative lifestyle which avoids the excess eating. Sitting at the computer too much? Go out to the mall and walk around for a while. Clean up your dam yard!
Third, now that you're focussed on a better lifestyle, it'll be easy to reduce the daily high calorie snack stuff. Instead of a 12 oz glass of root beer and a bowl of ice cream, have some water or orange juice. Instead of a bag of chips, have a supply of prepped and ready-to-eat carrots and celery and radishes on hand.
With Ranch dressing!
(Lite, if you can tolerate it.) I LOVE all flavors of potato chips, but I'll eat the veggies if they're available. When I get the munchies, I can scarf down 3 carrot sticks, 3 celery sticks, 3 radishes,
and
, an ounce of ranch dressing.
Make good stuff readily available.
Last, don't have big heavy meals after 7 pm. My Mexican friends got me into the habit of eating a big steak dinner with rice and beans late at night (10 pm). That ain't good! (But it sure was fun!!) My Compadre and I are both paying for it now... Once a month instead of 4 times a month.
I am lucky to have a high metabolism rate, and never had an overweight problem. But, as I age, I'm keenly aware of what helps and what hurts my physical health. I've come to this conclusion:
Eat what you can burn off, and don't eat too much stuff that'll clog up your systems.
This ain't rocket science, but it does take some thought about your life, how you manage it, and where you want to be in 10 years.
