There's been a lot of "good news" stories on this thread the past few days, and they're great to read!
It's also good that when somebody totally blows their plan for a while, you're ready and willing to fess up and get back on track with your new and better eating habits.
The humor is also good! For example: " Bourbon? Does that help a person lose weight, or does it help you forget about the tasteless crap you ate?". Or, "there are a lot of cougars out there and you need to be in shape for that type of hunting...". Or, "I could be wrong No Chops1, but I don't think a good diet includes eating a meatloaf."
Losing weight CAN be fun!
Y'all know that I'm a guy who's never had an over-weight problem. I ran Track from 7th grade through my freshman college year. Other than that bout with "fast food" during and after college, and a complete inability to organize a decent meal for several years afterward, I've only had a couple of other lifestyle issues. So my little contribution to this thread is mostly to encourage you, and to offer my little bits of insight.
Mongo... glad you chimed in, man. We're totally with ya.
I want to be clear about my posts in this thread. I'm focussing on weight loss. Overall health is another topic.
Think of your body as a ReallySmartCar. You put fuel into it, and it uses the fuel according to its needs. When the fuel tank is full, and you put more fuel into it, it automatically hooks up with a sidecar, which it uses to store the extra fuel until it's needed. If you keep putting more fuel in, when the sidecar is full, the ReallySmartCar hooks up with another sidecar to store the additional fuel. To balance the weight, the ReallySmartCar connects one sidecar on each side. Ya know what I'm sayin'?
With regard to weight-loss diet plans: "Digest" what they advertise... fewer calories, more exercise. There, I just saved you $500. (Feel free to contribute 10 percent to the d.a.v.e. fund. ) I'm not ignoring other important health issues related to being overweight, I'm just talking about losing weight.
Exercise is certainly a good thing, and of course burns calories. But for losing weight, it's a secondary component in the equation. If you're consuming 4000 calories a day, you'd have to be exercising a lot to burn it off. Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps said he consumes about 9000 calories a day. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Yet he's not overweight. How does he do it? He works out more hours a day than most of us ever will. He burns it! "Exercise", for most of us, is a euphemism for "do something other than sit at your desk or walk to the cafeteria or the car". Join a gym if it helps your attitude. Go to the mall and walk around it 4 times if you like. "Upping" your activity burns more calories. But your main
weight loss
strategy should be to reduce your calorie intake to a level where you're burning it, and not storing it in fat.
