I agree that the Theme from Summer of '42 from M.F. Horn Two is very nice. Maynard's ballad work is both appreciated by fans and wildly under-appreciated by critics. Another fine ballad performance came on his very next album, M.F. Horn 3, an otherwise often overlooked LP. The Love Theme from 'The Valachi Papers' is quite nice, though obviously not quite as recognizable, and also displays Maynard's mastery of the entire range of the horn.
I'm glad others find this chart to be so nice, and the band's playing is beautiful throughout. Maynard's flugel sound is warm and pretty, and then he soars lyrically on the trumpet. I've been listening to all of M.F. Horn 3 since I thought about this tune, and there is much to admire on the album. Another great ballad, 'Round Midnight is also quite nice.

Here is a clip of Dave Stahl playing Summer of 42 with Buddy's band...

And as far as MF ballads, I've always liked this recording..
