When I first started working on my soloing in high school, I remember getting advice that I should listen to Miles. Being a young trumpet player, I said that I hated Miles Davis and that he was a bad trumpet player. Ray Nelson commented telling me that I just didn't understand his music yet and one day I would appreciate Miles. When I got to college, the first solo I had to transcribe for my jazz combo class was "So What" from Kind of Blue. I have been a Miles fan ever since. I still would rather have more technical skill than Miles, but he always picked the right notes.
