I also remember Dizzy being on a few times and he fronted the tonight show band on several feature numbers.
I even have a few of the performances on old VHS tapes somewhere.

Johnny also interviewed him on the couch every time he was on.  Dizzy of course sure was a big time trumpet legend too!
At the time was regarded as a famous international Jazz ambassador and Johnny frequently asked him about his overseas tours, travels and adventures.

I don't think "upstaging" was in anyones mind or any uncomfortable vibes between our two great trumpet hero's.

Both were unique and had their own style and I love both very much.

Remember Doc had high praise for the boss after his passing, and Maynard often spoke highly of Doc in many interviews.
Both were very intimately aware of each others skills and abilities ever since they worked together as young cats on Charlie Barnets band.

By all accounts they greatly admired and respected each other.

My guess is it was a timing/scheduling thing.
