Here is a question I have for anybody out there....how many times were other high profile trumpeters on the Tonight Show, such as Miles, Ali Hirt, Dizzy, etc?...if they were on, why was Carson not worried about these guys "upstaging" Doc?

By 'upstaging' I was suggesting that Maynard and Doc had the same stock-in-trade in that setting; bravura, virtuosic big-trumpet leader of a big band. The other players mentioned, while certainly capable, were not about that. Hirt, Terry, Dizzy, and Miles were known for other approaches.

I stand by the stylistic issue; I'm sure Carson was aware of Maynard's success in the 70s and 80s but was not impressed enough to have him on. Doc was his kind of player.
