On the other hand, Maynard's appearances on Mike Douglas and Dinah's shows were paid for by Columbia. My perception is that getting an invite to perform on the old Tonight Show was always viewed as a privilege, and couldn't be bought. If offered, would Maynard have turned down the opportunity? I doubt it. Assuming no scheduling conflicts...the guy's home base was California after all. Would it have helped his career? Absolutely, if for no other reason than the sheer exposure would have introduced him to countless new potential fans. If Johnny didn't want you on, you didn't get on. All that being said, I doubt there was any animosity between MF and the show, his music likely wasn't Johnny's cup of tea. Then again, he was a fan of Chase(!?)
