I agree with you on the Sass and Brass as well...I watched it a couple of times and really have no interest in watching it again...not only is his playing uncomfortable, but as you say, he was trying to fit it but just could not..it really looked like "forced" camaraderie with the others...maybe our perception is not accurate, but he surely does not look comfortable..he looked like he was holding back when he played "I Can't Get Started" with Al Hirt.
Also, did you see the clip on Dinah Shore Show in 1976?...now, he played awesome on that show, but right after he played "Something" the guests gathered around Dinah and Maynard as the credits were rolling...I remember Rich Little was one of the guests...seems like Maynard was ignored so he turned his attention back to the band....it was a little uncomfortable to watch it.
