Rick - see? Once again we agree COMPLETELY!
Your post above is spot-on, although I will jump in and mention your small kudo about Doc was not missed by me... that's what Severinsen did, and he did it marvelously. Better than any other trumpet personality, he was a perfect foil for Carson and Ed. Maynard and others would not have handled the "off-trumpet" portion of that show nearly as well. Just as Doc would not have handled the rigors of playing 2.5 hour kill-your-face high note concerts night after night, riding on a road bus, gigs as well as Mr. Ferguson did. It's marvelous, in my opinion, they both found their "niche" so appropriately!
