I want to thank everybody for their valuable input....this has been a most interesting discussion...after reading all of your input, it seems the reasons for MF's non-appearance seem to fall into the in following categories:

1. Scheduling conflict with Maynard's tour schedule.
2. MF did not want to play during his tour break since his high-note chops were not in prime shape.
3. Upstaging or competitive factors between MF and Doc.
4. Johnny just not digging MF.
5. Maynard's manangement and the recording company's management not proactive in getting him on the show.
6. Maynard would not appear if he could not bring his own band with him.

I may have missed a few points, but these five come to the top of my head...as far as the scheduling, I don't by that one...I mean, in 30 years the two parties could not agree to ONE day to be on the show??..he could have come on at least once a year, if not that, how about once every 5 years??..but NO appearances in 30 years??...as far as the tour break, I could absolutely see that as a factor....Maynard certainly wanted to be in tip-top shape to perform live on national television....now, even though both MF and Doc were absolute professionals, they are still human...is it possible there was a discomfort level reason that negated Doc and MF performing out front together?.(it was noted Maynard did not appear to be in his comfort zone on Sass and Brass)

As far as Maynard not being able to bring his own band with him, I don't think that would have been an issue...in 1972, the Airmen of Note played on the Tonight Show , and the entire band was there..I don't think Johnny would have had an issue with MF bringing his own band with him.

I guess it will forever remain a mystery...just a damn shame Maynard never appeared after 1962.
