Ah Ha! I remembered one! Just came into my head!
When we where putting together music for the first High Voltage group Boss flew me out to Ojai where he lived to write some stuff. We basically hung out for about 3 days and just sort of brainstormed if you can call it that. Writing with Boss was it's own thing for sure. He had a room with a little spinet piano and we basically just hung out and fooled around. When it was over I would go back and the hotel and try and organize it all into something.
Well Boss likes the loose type thing which really made things easy. We were in his pool which was just off the back of his house. I had some manuscript paper by the shallow end and boss was in the pool with his horn. When he would play he would put the bell under water so is sounded like a double C gargle. He said he practiced like that sometimes so we wouldn't disturb the neighbors. I remember Boss playing Shuffle Monk while I was under water to check out the effect. It was a riot!
He loved that pool.
Composition is not always as scientific or inspirationally driven as one would think. But it can be very aquatic!
