Here is the announcement we've been waiting for! The University of North Texas will be hosting a Maynard Ferguson musical tribute in Fort Worth Texas at McDavid Studio on October 17! Here are the details: "Dreaming of Birdland" A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson featuring the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band with special guests Pete DeSiena and Stockton Helbing (more guests to be announced soon!) For info on McDavid Studio (part of Bass Performance Hall), to buy tickets, and to stay on top of developing details go to: http://www.basshall.com/ and click on McDavid Studio We will be playing the killer music of the Birdland Dream Band era as well as a taste of Big Bop Nouveau (Besame Mucho for sure, and some surprises). Pete DeSiena is one of the greatest living players of Tenderly and will no doubt play that and then some, while our man Stockton will be featured on Besame and then take it from there! I am working on one more major trumpet soloist as well. More on that soon. The One O'Clock Lab Band will be fueled by a great lead trumpet player: James Blackwell, and the whole band is burning this semester, so it should be a blast! Other members of the MF "extended family" are trying to clear their schedules e'en as I type, so I will alert you as soon as things firm up. Here is a chance to breath life into this great collection, and I hope you all will be able to be there! The place will sell out soon, so go grab some tix and spread the word! More later... It has very cool table seats with good line of sight from all angles. A very hip room to play and an excellent place to present jazz. I know that you will enjoy it greatly. See you there! My 14 yr old t-bone player has a football game to march in that night, plus the Iowa state marching contest is the next day. Steve, I plan on signing him up for the band camp there next summer (and I'm planning to stay in Denton the whole week as well).... maybe one of these concerts can coincide with the trumpet/trombone camp???????? Just an idea to throw out there. Thanks a million for keeping this music alive! Brian

Oh, man, when I first "discovered" the One O'Clock back in 1988 he was the lead trumpet player, and with all due respect to all the leads since him, he remains my favorite! He was playing with Maynard when I saw Maynard for the first time live here in Austin at The Paramount in 1992. Glenn Kostur was also in that band. Damn, now I'm really pissed that I may end up missing this one. I'll have to find a way to make it now!

Wayne, IN bands at a regional HS marching band competition. We were lined up in the end zone getting ready to play next... when...... Craig started to play!!! I believe it was MF's Carnival that he played, and without a mic those double B's cut through the air like a sharp knife. I kid you not that all of us looked at each other with the same look... as in why do we even bother playing after that. When I get together with my old friends now almost 25 yrs later we always talk about that day.... we were practically cheering for him to go higher, and higher.......

Also (and I realize this is really nitpicking), the only MF recordings to use the title of Birdland Dream Band (aside from reissues) were the two albums that Maynard recorded for Vik in 1956 (the Live at Peacock Lane Fresh Sounds reissue uses the Dream Band name but drops the word Birdland). Of the arrangers mentioned above (Benny Golson, Ernie Wilkins, Don Sebesky, Slide Hampton, Willie Maiden, and Mike Abene), only Wilkins arranged for the Birdland Dream Band (he also played baritone saxophone in the band). Note that the Birdland Dream Band was made up of New York studio musicians, while the Peacock Lane band was made up of West Coast studio musicians playing pretty much the same charts. Golson, Sebesky, Hampton, Maiden, and Abene wrote for the so-called Roulette band, which began recording for that label in 1958 and released albums through 1964 as Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra. That orchestra was made up of the musicians that toured with Maynard (Golson was an exception) and also arranged for the band (Don Menza and Don Rader are two more notable examples). Confused? It gets worse...the label's jazz wing was actually called Roulette Birdland (Count Basie and Sarah Vaughan were also on the roster); and Maynard's band was essentially the house band at Birdland, where MF and the band recorded the live Roulette album A Message from Birdland. Reminds me of when I was in high school there was a trumpet player out of San Antonio named Pat Murray who was a phenomenal lead player and featured rather well in his high school's marching shows. I believe he played lead trumpet in the Texas All-State Jazz Band three years in a row. Actually his high school had several great young trumpet players in the early 90's...Curtis Calderon (Four Freshmen) being another one I remember.
