Hey everybody,
Sorry about my late post about this but I just gotta sing the praises of Maynard alumni Nick Lane.
I had the pleasure of hearing him playing with Chicago this past Friday in Englewood, New Jersey.
I expected to see Pankow, everyone who is a bone player told me to watch out for him he is good. I certainly have that sound he gets in my head listening to all those Chicago tunes on the radio over the years. Anyway to my pleasant surprise out walks Nick on stage along with Lee Thornburg as subs.
I have heard him with Maynard three times and also heard him at Stratospheric as well. I know he has chops and I'm a big fan of his playing.
I really was pleasantly surprised hearing him in this setting, punchy horn line rock band gig. He really shines in this playground! Him and Lee both sounded great together and the boss would be smiling and proud to see how much joy and fun this guy puts into the show!
He just looked like he was was having the time of his life on stage, dancing, smiling, and just having fun with all the guy's on stage. I'm telling you if you took a little kid to the show on Friday night he would want to be a musician and more specifically a trombone player because Nick just makes it look like the coolest most fun thing in the world.
To me it's actually quite refreshing! Who wants to pay good money these days for a ticket to see musicians sulking, looking tired from jet lag, and looking at their watches? If Nick was tired or jetlaged you wouldn't know it at all! What a pro!
I didn't get a chance at the end to introduce myself and talk with him, so I'm not sure how long he is on the tour filling in for Pankow.
But if they are coming to a venue near you, do yourself a favor and check them out.
Nick Lane tears up the rock gig like he was born into it!
