Hello All Forum Folk!
I am looking forward to seeing many of you guys at the big MF Tribute Concert this Saturday in Sherman Texas! Bill and Sue Collins have done amazing work getting all of this put together and you are all in for a real treat. As Bill says: it will be a special day in Jazz history. Two years ago, I went out to Ojai California to do an inventory on the estate with Kim Ferguson. I must say, it was an emotional and surreal experience to see all of that stuff again. The last time I had seen many of those items was when we were actually using them on the road, and Maynard was actually wearing them! (the clothes that is
) How strange to see it all in a museum type environment. But guess what, that is where it all should be now so that you the fans can be around it all and experience it. It all needs to be alive and well and enjoyed by everyone.
ALSO, I wanted to give you a tantalizing sneak-peek at the set list and prepare you for something new that we will be doing. Having had the honor of being a close friend of Boss and knowing him as well as I did, I know that he would want the One O'Clock to play some of their new music as well. Maynard loved to show off and feature the young musicians in his band and their music. Sometimes, he would look at one of us and say "OK, it's your band!" and then walk off the stage. I believe the last thing he would want is concert after concert of his greatest hits being played by someone else as ghost-band museum music. If we played a concert like that for him, I can just hear him saying "Yeah, yeah, but what about YOUR music? That's what I want to hear"
And indeed, on the road Boss would program his newest stuff for the majority of the show and then end with the pieces "that put his kids through college".
So, in that spirit, here's what we are planning to do:
My blood brothers Wayne Bergeron and Denis DiBlasio will be featured on two pieces each, Wayne will be playing lead on some other things, and Denis will be blowing on other things as well. We will alternate between great charts from the Ferguson library and material from the One O'Clock book that is slated for our "Lab 2010"
Here is the specific rundown:
8 charts from the MF book:
3 from the 1970s
2 from the 1960s
2 from 2000s
1 that was part of all eras
6 from The One O'Clock Book
1 from 1989
5 From 2010
PS: Our closer is a One O'Clock chart, so if you cheer really loudly the encore will be one of the most beloved Maynard charts of all time ( I know that I never got tired of it, even though I must have played it at least 3,000 times!)
So there it is! Plus: if you are planning on being there early in the day DO NOT miss the museum and all of the presentations. Stan and co. in the morning, Maristella at 1:00, then me, Denny, Wayne, and Ed at 2:00PM. I hope to see you all there. No doubt: A good time will be had by all!
