I was listening to the XM Blues station yesterday, and heard Muddy Waters' definitive version of "(I ain't gonna be your) Hoochie Coochie Man"
remembering the recent thread of Pagliacci, a new thread of the diversity of Maynard's songs worked its way into my mind.
He seemed to have nothing off limits when he cut his guys loose on the arrangement mission.
Now when I'm not Gonna be...came out, I seriously disliked it
It was down there with Galactia, Whatcha' Doin' Baby, and Topa-Topa Woman.
With personal maturity and the benefit of some historical perspective, I've come to appreciate the wide arms that Mayn had when it came to muscial styles.
At 17 years old, I wanted every song to be Mac's Park, Chameleon, and Rocky.
But now have come to enjoy and appreciate even the variety that the Boss displayed. (Even the wierd stuff like "9 to 5".)
Now I hear songs from so many sources and "wish that Maynard would have covered that."
As I listened to Michael Jackson strain to reach the notes of "Got to Be There" the other day, I secretly wished that it would be covered by a trumpet player, and that the only one with the chops and the stones to do it would have Maynard Ferguson.
What songs do you wish he would have done?
(P.S. Topa Topa woman still sucks!)
