Though I guessed that it was the Brecker Bros. pretty quickly, it's interesting that I also thought there was a second trumpeter on the track. Maynard was probably right about the sound of Randy Brecker. There must have been an edit or a microphone repositioning, because there was a definite aural, tonal shift at one point. Good stuff (though Feather probably did not need to play the whole cut). Can't wait to hear more! Thanks again...

Pretty obvious that it was the Brecker Brothers but I probably wouldn't have known if asked in the 70's either. I really enjoyed the "Over The Rainbow" clip on the other thread as well. It does not surprise me that Maynard is stumped by these things, as I remember he was always pretty horrible at this game in the Down Beat print versions of the Blindfold Test. Still, he has interesting things to say about the players. Do you know, were these directly transcribed for the magazine? The reason I ask is that I'm having some deja vu regarding this session, mostly because of this Clark Terry and Oscar Peterson exchange. I think I recall this conversation from reading it back in the seventies. Anyway, great stuff and keep it coming. Even if it's the same Blindfold test, it's very nice to hear it straight from the high note horse's mouth. Thanks again...

I've been attempting to post additional clips from Maynard's Blindfold test via Twitter's Twiturm... as you can see on earlier posts, part 1 and part 2 posted fine, and they are playable from this site... however, my attempts to copy and paste the embed code for part 3 failed repeatedly -- also, my attempts to post the earlier clips as a test using the exact same embed codes that worked before are now failing. Has anyone experience this problem, and even better, is anyone aware of a solution? I'd much rather post these things as playable objects on this site, rather than as links to other sites... (also, I've got other things from Maynard's guest appearance with my "kid band" way back when that I'd like to share...) -- thanks...

That track is not my cup of tea, but it's interesting that Maynard had a better idea about those players, revealing perhaps that he was more connected internally to some of the old school guys closer to his generation than, say, the Brecker Brothers or Jon Faddis. Of course, that makes sense on some level, but Maynard did not always get much credit for his "ear" for other players. Nice to hear him pick Miles and Coltrane out of such an odd arrangement. (Odd to me, anyway.) I hated the piano cascades early in the piece, but I enjoyed some of the blowing later in the chart. Thanks again for sharing. Nice stuff!
