In the spirit of the (best) Mac Park thread, this thread is devoted to discussion of Maynard's best performance of Hey Jude, be that recorded and distributed totally on the up and up, or otherwise.
I vote fot the first 3 1/2 minutes of playing on "Maynard Ferguson Live At The Great American Music Hall Part II", which I believe is an unedited, non-overdubbed live recording. Unfortunately, the remiander of the track is uneven and not of uniformly high musical quality. For that first 3 1/2 minutes, Maynard and the band were really on, and no stupid soprano sax, either. And by the way, I think the 1812 overture quote (not in this performance - maybe it was a later era thing) gets old by the first time you hear it, and don't view it an an intrinsic part of the Hey Jude experience. Now, what is missing from this performance are the trunpets playing in the audience, so yes it could be better, and of course there are Maynard flubs later in the song (some overdubbing might have been nice, but apparently, this CD wasn't authorized by Maynard, and was prodiced on a non- cooperstive basis). Are there better live recordings which I haven't heard - perhaps, if so, bring them on.
By the way. The Nice and Juicy on " Maynard Ferguson Live At The Great American Music Hall Part I" ain't too shabby either.
