To me, Al Jarreau was to jazz singing what Maynard was to trumpet playing. Ever since I first heard him on the radio in 1980 ("Never Givin' Up" in a promo for a concert) I was hooked on his incomparable vocal skills, and went to see him every time he came to town, as well as buying everything he recorded, just like I did for Maynard. "We're In This Love Together" was our wedding song (the right song at the right time, though he did so many others that were even better). I even named two boats after his songs. My life's soundtrack was filled with his music (alongside Maynard and other greats).
I know a lot of great sidemen also "cut their teeth" in his bands, so I'm sure he'll be missed by many.
RIP, Al Jarreau.
